10月はピンクリボン月間―自分の身体と向き合うとき

October is "Pink Ribbon Month."

You've surely seen cities around the world turn pink. When the skyscrapers of New York, the streets of Paris, and Tokyo's landmarks all glow in the same color, it sends a universal message about breast cancer, spreading accurate knowledge and the importance of early detection and treatment.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, with one in nine women in Japan said to be affected. However, if detected early, over 90% of cases are curable, so it is not a disease to be feared. The pink ribbon does not symbolize "fear of disease," but rather "the courage to look forward" and "the power to support each other around the world." The symbolism has spread to the realms of fashion, art, and culture, with luxury brands releasing special collections and landmarks around the world being lit up in pink, evolving into a culture that appeals to the importance of screening throughout society.

So what can each of us do? The first step is to face our own bodies . Breast cancer is one of the few cancers that can be detected by oneself, and self-examination is a simple yet powerful habit that can protect the future. Once a month, a few days after your period ends, stand in front of the mirror and observe any changes in the shape and skin of your breasts, checking with your hands for any lumps or tightness. Just a few minutes of your time can save a life. If you notice any changes that concern you, it's important not to hesitate to consult a specialist.

Of course, self-examination alone is not enough to ensure safety. Regular checkups are the surest way to detect cancer early. Currently, there are multiple options for breast cancer screening, and it is recommended that you choose the method that is most appropriate for your age, constitution, and risk level.

  • Mammography : A basic examination that uses X-rays to take a picture of the breast and show minute calcifications. It is particularly effective for women over 40, and regular examinations are recommended.

  • Breast ultrasound (echo) : An examination that uses high-frequency sound waves to visualize the inside of the mammary glands. This is radiation-free and suitable for young women with denser mammary glands, as well as pregnant and lactating women.

  • Breast MRI : High-resolution imaging diagnostic using magnetic resonance. Effective for detailed examinations in cases where mammography or ultrasound is difficult to determine, or for those with a high genetic risk.

  • Breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography) : A new-generation examination method that allows for three-dimensional observation of the breast by overlaying multiple cross-sectional images. It is expected to improve diagnostic accuracy by making it easier to detect abnormalities even in highly dense breasts.

Each of these tests has its own advantages and limitations, and the same method may not be optimal for everyone. It's important to consult with your doctor and choose a method that suits your life stage and constitution. Now that there are more options for checkups, proactively thinking about which ones to take will help protect your future.

The pink ribbon is not just a campaign, but a "signal that unites the world." The pink lights adorning city skylines and ribbons featured in brand campaigns encourage people fighting breast cancer and show the support of society as a whole.

If you see a pink ribbon around town this fall, it's a sign to take care of yourself . To protect your health and future, why not take some time to have a conversation with your own body? Making positive choices will create a tomorrow filled with hope.
